Rwanda Unveils Africa’s First Public Flight of a Self-Flying Passenger Drone

KIGALI —
Rwanda has taken a major leap in aviation innovation after successfully showcasing the first public flight of an autonomous passenger drone on the African continent.

The live demonstration was held in Kigali on Wednesday, ahead of the Africa Aviation Summit 2025, scheduled for September 4–5. The event featured the EHang EH216-S, an electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft capable of flying without a pilot on board.

The milestone was achieved through a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and EHang, one of the world’s leading developers of urban air mobility solutions.

During the test flight, the two-seater EH216-S climbed to roughly 100 meters, signaling Rwanda’s readiness to explore new forms of advanced and eco-friendly air transportation.

Strengthening Rwanda’s Role as an Aviation Innovation Hub

Rwandan officials say this demonstration reinforces the country’s ambition to position itself as Africa’s center for experimenting with next-generation aviation technologies. By joining forces with EHang’s cutting-edge aircraft technology and CRBC’s engineering expertise, Rwanda intends to accelerate the development of an Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) ecosystem.

AAM systems are expected to help reduce traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and introduce cleaner, faster, and more efficient mobility options for urban travelers.

The Minister of Infrastructure, who represented the government during the launch, noted that the initiative reflects Rwanda’s broader vision for modern, interconnected cities.

“We are shaping a future where innovation drives mobility and expands economic opportunities,” the Minister said. “Our partnership with CRBC enables us to attract new technologies and skills to the continent. This landmark flight shows our commitment to creating a safe and forward-looking regulatory space for Advanced Air Mobility.”

Contribution of CRBC and EHang

HUANG Qilin, Director General of CRBC in Rwanda, said the collaboration aligns with Rwanda’s ambition to lead in new aviation frontiers.

“We are honored to support Rwanda’s efforts to pioneer emerging aviation technologies. With our global experience, we hope to help the country tap into the growing low-altitude economy and set new standards for innovation in Africa,” he said.

EHang highlighted that the EH216-S belongs to a new class of fully autonomous eVTOL aircraft already operating in parts of Asia and the Middle East. Its debut in Rwanda marks the first African demonstration, placing the country among early adopters of drone-based passenger transport.

A Global Trend Reaches Africa

Autonomous passenger drones—often referred to as “air taxis”—are still in early development globally, but several nations, including China and the United Arab Emirates, have already begun integrating them into their urban mobility plans.

These electric-powered aircraft offer a low-emission option for short-distance travel and are viewed as a potential game-changer for cities struggling with traffic and pollution.

With this successful flight, Rwanda has positioned itself alongside global innovators, showcasing its determination to lead Africa into a new era of smart, sustainable aviation.
