Rwanda has opened its doors to a high-profile guest as President Paul Kagame received His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, who arrived in Kigali for a three-day State Visit aimed at expanding cooperation between the two nations.
The Emir’s aircraft touched down at Kigali International Airport in the early evening, where he was warmly welcomed by President Kagame. The two leaders held a private Tête-à-Tête session before presiding over the signing of four new agreements spanning culture, sports, tourism and business events, and aviation logistics — sectors both governments see as key pillars for accelerating economic growth.
Rwanda and Qatar have steadily built one of the strongest bilateral partnerships on the African continent. Their cooperation began gaining momentum years ago, particularly after President Kagame’s two-day State Visit to Doha in November 2018. That visit paved the way for the signing of agreements in air services, reciprocal investment protection, and a framework for economic and technical collaboration. Since then, both countries have consistently maintained active diplomatic engagement.
A statement from the Office of the President noted that Kagame and Sheikh Tamim used the Kigali meeting to explore new avenues of economic cooperation, reaffirming their shared commitment to long-term partnership. High-level delegations from both sides attended the ceremony and witnessed the new deals take shape.
This year has already seen renewed Qatar–Rwanda engagement. In March, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, made an official visit to Kigali, where he met Prime Minister Dr. Édouard Ngirente. He was accompanied by a delegation of Qatari business leaders interested in exploring Rwanda’s investment landscape, particularly in areas aligned with the country’s long-term development vision.
A major symbol of the countries’ cooperation remains Qatar Airways — the award-winning, five-star airline that has connected Doha and Kigali since 2012. The airline has played an important role in Rwanda’s drive to position itself as a continental hub for air travel, tourism, and international conferences.
As the Emir’s visit continues, analysts expect more discussions on trade, logistics, and strategic investments, reinforcing the fast-growing partnership between Kigali and Doha — a relationship that continues to gather momentum with each high-level exchange.
